At Steel City Self Defense, we believe that martial arts training is not just about physical fitness, but also about mental and emotional growth. Our philosophy is based on the principles of respect, self-discipline, and perseverance. We strive to create a positive and supportive environment where students can learn and grow both on and off the mat.
We offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of every student, from kids to adults. Our programs include Kenpo karate, Kung fu, and Jiu-jitsu. Our experienced instructors provide personalized attention and guidance to help each student achieve their goals and reach their full potential.
Sensei Colin Calkins began his martial arts journey in 1996 under the late Sifu Christopher Zeth. In 2013, he earned his 6th-degree rank in Sifu Zeth's martial art, Mo Shi Do, a system that blends elements of Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, and various Kenpo styles. During his training, he also achieved a 2nd-degree rank in International Kenpo Karate under Sensei Robert Koch.
With decades of experience, Sensei Colin is passionate about sharing the physical, mental, and personal benefits of martial arts. He takes great pride in helping students build confidence, discipline, and life skills while watching them grow both on and off the mat.
Professor Jason Aronica's martial arts journey began with wrestling in high school in 2000. After graduating, he continued competing in junior college while expanding his training into judo and kempo from 2002 to 2004. In 2005, he then began studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Syracuse and, around the same time, added boxing and Muay Thai to his training. This period also marked his first formal fight camps and competitive experience in combat sports. In 2016, he had the opportunity to train with Professor Pedro Sauer alongside Rylan Lizares, Scott Smith, and Jeff Curran, further shaping his technical approach to Jiu-Jitsu. From 2018 to present, he trains primarily at Pedro Sauer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association schools and events, continuing to refine his skills and deepen his knowledge of the art. Throughout his career, he has competed in numerous tournaments, including Grapplers Quest, NAGA, Pan American Championships, and many other grappling events. he has also participated in and coached countless fight camps, helping prepare both himself and other athletes for competition. Teaching has always been a passion of his—he has been instructing children's classes since earning his blue belt in 2010 and has been teaching adult students since 2012, with a focus on building strong fundamentals, technical proficiency, and confidence on and off the mats.
